Interact Club and Student Council partnered with Delaware County People in Need (PIN) for the Thanksgiving Food Drive. Both clubs collected food for people in shelters or to be packaged to people who need it.

Sophomore Interact Treasurer Gabriela Tiberi and Interact Club Adviser and Intervention Specialist Linda Dulin, have helped organize the drive and coordinate with PIN for delivery.

“OOHS has partnered with Delaware County People in Need for a few years. They reached out to Ms. Ellis and Interact Club and Student Council decided to take the lead this year on the food drive,’’ Dulin said.

PIN told the school groups what items they especially need and gave them a time frame for the collection. The collection period ended on Monday, Nov. 18.

“We collected food for about three weeks. We specifically focused on collecting instant mashed potatoes, and one other prepackaged food item. However, people brought a variety of stuff that we will also take to them,” Tiberi said.

Many people can get involved in future food drives like this one even if they donate a singular item because that one singular item can help multiple people who will be very grateful for your donation.

“Specific challenges we faced during the food drive was emphasizing the deadline and communicating that toward people, but in the future we are going to run it differently so each person brings in a specific thing so we don’t have people bringing in stuff that’s not even on the list which even though is helpful, it’s not what we were assigned to provide for the company we partnered with,” Tiberi said.

This was challenging for them considering people still brought in stuff after the deadline which did cause a bit of chaos and confusion but overall, all the donations were helpful even if they were past the due date.

“Taking it to the company to allow the food to get distributed to shelters and packaged to people in need,” Dulin said, when asked how they were going to assure it was delivered.

“Our goals for this food drive were to collect as much as possible for People in Need and to continue growing as a club,” Tiberi said.

Interact Club is happy to have done this event because though they didn’t count, they collected hundreds of items and are hosting more drives and other things to help the community in the future.
