Prepping for summer shopping: A guide to the best summer wear

As the sun’s rays grow warmer and summer approaches, teens eagerly anticipate updating their wardrobes with the latest trends in summer fashion. From breezy dresses to stylish shorts, the options are endless. But navigating the world of summer clothes shopping can be daunting, with trends evolving rapidly and budgets to consider.

One key aspect of summer clothes shopping for teens is finding pieces that strike the perfect balance between style and comfort. Breathable fabrics like cotton and linen are essential for staying cool during scorching summer days. Additionally, versatile pieces that can easily transition from a day at the beach to a night out with friends are highly sought after.

“I find clothes online through Instagram ads, reels or TikToks about new summer clothes and just basically see what influencers or high ranked people in the fashion industry are wearing, and if I like their style of the clothing, I’ll look into buying it,” senior Leah Weaver said.

Staying on-trend without overspending is another key consideration. Exploring sales racks at popular stores like H&M, Forever 21 and Zara can yield trendy finds at budget-friendly prices. Thrift stores like Goodwill and online platforms such as Depop and Poshmark are also great options for snagging deals on summer essentials.

“I always shop at Hollister, Abercrombie, Aerie, Pacsun, American Eagle, Dicks, GIlly Hicks, Zara, H&M, Offline and sometimes even Target,” Weaver said.

Accessories play a vital role in completing a summer look. Consider browsing stores like Urban Outfitters or Free People for statement sunglasses, hats of various styles and woven tote bags. Mixing and matching accessories allows teens to express their individuality and experiment with different styles effortlessly.

“The most important clothing is comfort for the summer and I think a lot of girls over expose themselves and I personally don’t feel comfortable wearing smaller pieces of clothing like that,” junior Hadley McPherson said.

Lastly, shopping sustainably is becoming increasingly important. Opt for ethically made clothing brands like Patagonia, Reformation and Everlane. Embracing second and fashion by shopping at thrift stores or online platforms not only reduces environmental impact but also allows for unique and budget-friendly finds.

“Typically, when shopping for clothes, I tend to look for the color and design of the clothing and compare it to how it would look on me. I like to use the color theory which categorizes certain shades and colors such as a cool winter tone, or a warm spring,” sophomore Ava Gray said. “I’m a cool summer or a light winter because the shades under those categories look best on me.”

Navigating the world of summer clothes shopping for teens involves striking a delicate balance between style, comfort, and budget-conscious decisions. With a plethora of options available, from trendy retailers to thrift stores and online platforms, teens have the opportunity to create unique and fashionable summer wardrobes without breaking the bank. By prioritizing breathable fabrics, exploring accessory options and considering sustainable fashion practices, teens can confidently embrace the summer season with stylish ensembles that reflect their individuality and values.
