Trick or Treating, horror movies, costume parties: these are all things associated with Halloween. Halloween is a chance to celebrate with friends, have fun and enjoy the holiday. The Courier staff believes that students should have the day after Halloween off from school.

This year Halloween is on a Saturday, but we aren’t always so lucky. Nothing is worse than having to go to school after a late night of Trick or Treating, eating candy and watching horror movies.

The Courier staff thinks that we should have the day after Halloween off from school, and the rest of the school seems to agree. According to a poll posted on the Courier Instagram, @oohscourier, 73 percent of people voted saying they want the day after Halloween off from school, rather than the day of. According to Day Out with the Kids, none of Ohio’s major school districts have school off the day after Halloween. However, we believe this should change.

We believe that school should be off the day after Halloween, rather than the day of, because even if students have school on Halloween, many traditions don’t start until later in the day. Students will still have plenty of time to get ready. Additionally, going to school on Halloween can be fun, kids can wear costumes or do Halloween-themed activities.

One reason that we believe school should be cancelled is because people are going to be up late, whether staying out Trick or Treating and passing out candy, or hanging out with friends. No one goes to bed on time on Halloween. Students aren’t going to be focused if they’re tired; the day off would give them a chance to catch up on the sleep they missed. According to Understood, a lack of sleep affects ability to focus, which makes learning harder.

Students aren’t going to enjoy that day, and many will probably end up not going anyway. According to Education Week, Nov. 1, the day after Halloween was said by a teacher to be the day that was skipped the most. While missing one day might not be a big deal, those absences can start to add up.

Having the next day off of school also means that people can spend more time hanging out with friends, even doing sleepovers if that’s what they want. Halloween is supposed to be fun and an opportunity to make meaningful memories; kids shouldn’t have to spend less time with their friends just because they have to wake up early for school.

This change could also be beneficial to teachers. Teachers who have kids will likely want to take their kids Trick or Treating, and if not, then they might want to pass out candy. Even if the teachers don’t want to stay up late, having the extra day off could be beneficial for catching up on work that needs to be done.

The same goes for students – an additional day off could be helpful in catching up on homework or studying for upcoming tests and quizzes. According to Cross River Therapy, 45 percent of high school students report feeling stressed every day in high school. If students have school the day of Halloween, any homework from that day might not get done because kids will be getting ready, and nobody wants to worry about homework on Halloween.

Halloween is supposed to be a fun night; kids shouldn’t have to stress about getting to sleep and going to school the next day.

This day off would also benefit parents. Nobody wants to wake up a grumpy kid after a sugar high and a poor night’s sleep. Many kids already have enough trouble waking up for school on regular days and this just adds to the problem. Overall, this extra day off of school would be beneficial to everyone.
