The Columbus Blue Jackets came out on top in a thrilling 6-4 victory against the Dallas Stars on Tuesday, February 25, at Nationwide Arena. The game was a highlight not only for the team but for Orange journalism students who attended the game as part of a field trip.

For Zion, a standout player, the game was the highlight of the trip. “The highlight of the trip for me was the game,” he said. “I love the energy of the arena during games, and it was even more exciting because we were winning.”

As part of the field trip, journalism students had the opportunity to interview members of the Blue Jackets’ media team and ask questions about the behind-the-scenes aspects of sports journalism. Zion reflected on the valuable lessons shared during the trip: “The session definitely taught me the importance of authenticity in pursuing a career. They talked about approaching journalism as yourself. They also talked about networking and all the opportunities it can bring.”

Emme, another student on the trip, shared her own favorite moments. “My favorite part of the trip was playing video games in the COSI kids room,” she said with excitement. “It was fun to play the game and then go watch the real thing.”

The students also gained insight into the inner workings of the team and the media’s role in shaping public perception. Zion noted, “I would have added more time in the schedule for journalism students from all the different schools to connect and network.”

Reflecting on the career advice shared during the session, Emme added, “One big takeaway from the session was to be bold and take risks to get the career opportunities you want.”

Of course, not every aspect of the trip was perfect. Emme had a small complaint: “One thing I’d change is the lack of water we had up until we went out to eat. I was parched!”

As for the game itself, Columbus controlled much of the play, holding off Dallas in a tight contest. With this victory, the Blue Jackets continue their push for a playoff spot, while fans and future journalists alike left Nationwide Arena with unforgettable memories.
