Bright cameras flashing in rapid motion while world renowned celebrities step out into the spotlight, mingling and posing. Talented artists, actors and directors are all awarded and honored for their achievements in the past year. Awards season is happening right now, starting from the beginning of January to March, with a couple scattered in the later months.

There are a multitude of awards shows happening this season. The most popular and well known are the Oscars, the Emmys, the Golden Globes, and the Grammys. The Golden Globes happened during the beginning of January and  the Grammys happened on Feb. 2. The Oscars is premiering on ABC on March 3rd while the Emmys are set to happen around September.

“They are great ways to celebrate art that so many people have yet to see. It has opened doors to new films, music, or TV that I never would have heard about,” junior Preston Brondet said. Brondet is an avid film enthusiast.

The main purpose of awards shows is to publicly commemorate the talented work of people in the media. This ranges from the best costume design in a movie to the best country album released in 2024.

“Lots of great movies this year and very charismatic people are up for awards, making for a fun award season,” Junior Abi Curry said. Curry is a passionate movie lover.

This year at the Golden Globes there was severe discontent online over a couple of awards. The musical “Emilia Perez” was the cause for most of it, with the movie winning best musical/comedy that night.

“There are just so many talented directors and actors, that you can’t really be upset who wins. That being said, there have been times I’ve been like “what are you talking about?”,” Curry said.

Some films that have won or anticipated to win big are “Wicked” and “The Brutalist” which both have 10 Oscar nominations. And “Emilia Perez”, which has the most nominations, 13, for the Oscars this year.

“My personal favorite is the Oscars. The Golden Globes are super fun though,” Curry said.

Many talented artists were nominated for the Grammys as well, which took place earlier in the month. Some notable singers being Beyonce, who now has had 99 nominations throughout her career, Billie Eillish, Charli XCX, and Taylor Swift.

“Usually, I disagree with half or so of the winners, but sometimes there are certain categories where I’m so happy about the winner,” Brondet said.

Awards shows are almost always filled with controversy, whether it be from a fan favorite singer being snubbed at the Grammys, or an overrated film swooping all the awards at the Golden Globes. They’re a great way of allowing us to appreciate the hard work and dedication of someone’s art, whether it’s an award being given to a famous actress or a composer for an album.

“I think they’re a great way to celebrate art. That being said I don’t think they should be the complete measure of success of an artist or project,” Curry said, “It’s nice to win, but something can be good even if it’s devoid of an award,”
