Every year the Olentangy choirs get together for their showcase. This is an event where they can show off all the hard work they’ve put in this year, and sing all the songs they learned.
The students have been preparing for the showcase all year, but have started to pick it up in the recent months prior to the show. They prepare by picking and choreographing the music, practicing the songs, and doing rehearsals where they practice their multiple outfit changes.
¨We prepared for showcase by sight reading the notes to each song and once we were comfortable we would use the actual words to sing with it and then we would come to an agreement on which outfit would look good for each song and we would have them ready and a week before the actual showcase we would rehearse everything from singing to outfit changes,¨ sophomore in Varsity Singers Vanshika Vijayanand said.
The choirs perform a variety of songs from R&B songs like ¨Boogie Wonderland¨ by Allie Willis and Jon wind, to more folk music like “Can’t Catch Me Now” by Olivia Rodrigo. The choirs put in a lot of work to create a setlist that everyone can enjoy.
¨ The students pick the theme for Showcase every year, and then pick the songs they want to sing based on the theme. We rehearse them in class daily, adding choreography, costuming, etc, again all student directed, ¨ Choir director Cherie Brooks said.
Showcase is a very challenging event to pull off. There are a lot of things that need to be done in order for this event to be successful, and things are constantly changing and shifting around in the days leading up to the performance.
Brooks said that the hardest part of running showcase is, ¨…pulling all of the pieces together, there are a lot of moving parts that are constantly changing.”
