On January 17, 2025 at 6 p.m., #1 ranked girls wrestling team in the state, Olentangy Orange made their way to Kent State University and took a 46-33 win against #2 ranked team Marysville High School. The dual was one of the most exciting matches of the girls’ season because of the history between the two teams.
Marysville has been a rival to Orange’s girls wrestling program since the program started. Marysville’s girls wrestling team is ranked second in the state, so when Orange girls won the match the gym was full of excitement.
“The match is so important because Marysville has really been our wrestling rival since we started our program. It’s nice for us to win against them because of that. If the turnout was different, I think it would honestly fuel us more to come back from the loss and really push ourselves more,” sophomore Abbey Simmons said.
The match at Kent State University was the first time Orange girls wrestled Marysville since last season. With Marysville ranked second in the state and Orange ranked first, it was a battle to excite the teams for the state tournament.
“I knew we would see them in the state finals and that win brought me hope,” sophomore wrestler Alanna Smith said. The Orange team saw the importance of the win because it would show them how the state tournament turnout would go.
The dual was not only an important event for the teams, but it was also an important showing of womens wrestling to the fans and supporters of adding womens wrestling as a D1 program. The match was held at a D1 college and it was an opportunity to show what the girls deserve based on their hard work and effort through the matches.
“It shows how deserving we are for the sport and the growth of the sport,” Smith said. The exciting match between Orange and Marysville was a perfect opportunity to showcase what womens wrestling can provide for the school.
