Out in the Community: Opinions on pep rallies

Usually when you think of a Pep Rally, you think of playing fun games, seeing sports of that current season being represented, among other things. That’s what students at Olentangy Orange expected for the annual winter pep rally.

However, instead of the Pep Rally being organized by student section leaders, the student council organized it, which has sparked controversy amongst many students.

“It was more boring than the other ones and it wasn’t entertaining,” Sophomore Violet Swenson said.

Many felt it was boring because it was advertised that teachers and administrators could be pied at this pep rally, but this didn’t happen either.

This sparked outrage with numerous students who felt like they were scammed out of their money, and came to the assembly for no reason.

“They didn’t do the teacher pieing which was extremely disappointing”. Sophomore Maddie Vocal said.

So what did they do at the pep rally? Well, they started off by introducing all of the winter sports. Seems normal right? Except none of the athletes came sans wrestling and one representative for swim and dive.

“I wish the sports team members actually came to the assembly, I also wish the pit leaders were there”. Said Swenson. And she is not the only one that thinks this way. Another sophomore, Katelyn Sharapan said; “I believe it’d be more entertaining if the pit leaders were there like they usually are”.

All-in-all, this pep rally will definitely be one to remember, and maybe the next one could be better than the last. There’s definitely some room for improvement. For example, students believe that the activities could’ve been better. And more up to date with current trends. “Dress to impress isn’t as popular anymore, they should’ve thought of something else that is trendy,” Sharapan said. Dress to impress was one of the activities done at the pep rally, however, they didn’t get to finish this game as everyone left.

If there’s ever a pep rally without a pit leader again, there’s definitely some changes that need to happen.
