Giving season: The ultimate guide to gift giving

The holidays are approaching soon which means it’s time to get gifts for loved ones. Presents are a great way to show the appreciation people have towards each other. It doesn’t matter how much money one spends but rather the effort put into it. However, sometimes it’s difficult to come up with good ideas on what to get someone, so here is a gift guide to help.

Giving a gift to a partner is a great way to express one’s love. Spending time with loved ones is very valuable and giving one’s presence and time is special. So, planning something to do together like a concert, movie or even just going out to dinner is special. Another idea for a loved one is a customized gift like a scrapbook, photo album or something personal.

“For someone you’re close to, I always try to give based on their love language. For example, if they like words of affirmation, add a long thoughtful letter to their gift. If they enjoy quality time, give them an experience like a Lego set or a gift card somewhere,” junior Skylar Dean said.

As mentioned earlier, an important thing about gifts is the love from the giver. Little to no money is required for giving a gift. For example, writing a personal letter to someone has more impact than buying a gift. A meaningful note brings a lot of joy to anyone and is free of charge.

The study, published this summer in The Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, suggests that small acts of kindness, not grand overtures, make people feel most loved and supported, according to NPR.com.

An idea to get a gift for anyone is a gift basket. The nice thing about gift baskets is they can be as little or as big as one wants. If a person’s not close enough with someone to pick out a specific gift they may like, putting together a gift basket is a good way to still show their effort. They could include anything simple, like a candle, blanket, socks and a gift card. The goal though is to put together items that the person would appreciate.

Giving a gift to someone we care about allows us to communicate our feelings and appreciation for them, according to activitysuperstore.com.

Buying gifts for teens can be difficult sometimes but giving them a choice is the key. Gift cards are a simple way to give the teen freedom of choosing what to get from a specific store. This gift still shows effort by the giver by picking a store the receiver would like. Also, social media platform, TikTok, promotes items such as UGGs and puts them on high demand. Choosing items that are very popular is also a great option although it may be expensive.

“The key to gift giving is making the overall gift cohesive and choosing items that you could genuinely see the receiver enjoying,” Dean said.

A cheap idea for people like coworkers, acquaintances or school friends is gift sets. Many stores like Target or Sephora provide lots of gift set options that can be low cost. Picking out a set that the receiver would like is special. Another thing to do is to research ideas online or on Pinterest and create a homemade gift.

“I like receiving gifts from everyone, especially from those who put a lot of effort into it. I don’t think it’s about the quality or price of the gift but the effort that’s put into it,” junior Ben Wisneski said.

Gift giving for parents is very simple. Most parents will be grateful for anything their child gives them. To make their gift extra special, give them something that holds importance and meaning in the family. There are many shops where teens can customize the present such as putting the family’s names on something. A cheaper alternative is always to make the parents a card or homemade present.

Handmade gifts are the perfect way to show that special someone just how much you care for them without having to spend a lot of money. Not only do they demonstrate your creative skills, but handmade items can be tailored specifically to the receiver’s individual preferences and style, according to plb.com.
