Recently, politics are becoming incredibly intense. Democratic Governor of California Gavin Newsom has been in a heated exchange with Republican President Donald Trump for over a month, not only in person, but also online.
This debate between the two high government officials all started when Trump sent thousands of troops to California during immigration protests. But, much like how every uncontrolled fight starts, this did not work for Newsom.
“There was never a need—and there is certainly no need now—for troops to be deployed against their own communities,” Newsom said, according to Time In The Loop.
In response to this, Trump decided it was time to redraw the election voting lines in Texas, which some considered crossed the lines of gerrymandering. This then led California to do the same thing.
“The federal government is trying to do things to sovereign states,” followed by, “this is a challenge that we have not seen before,” Government Teacher John Carmichael said.
Trump and Newsom have been publicly arguing back and forth online through social media platforms. It all started when Newsom used all caps in one of his X posts, which is typically what Trump does. After this occurred, Trump has stopped using caps all together.
“DONALD “TACO” TRUMP, AS MANY CALL HIM, “MISSED” THE DEADLINE!!! CALIFORNIA WILL NOW DRAW NEW, MORE ’BEAUTIFUL MAPS,’ THEY WILL BE HISTORIC AS THEY WILL END THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY (DEMS TAKE BACK THE HOUSE!)” an X post written by Newsoms personnel reads.
Trump responds to this post by insulting the state and the people of California by writing about how Californians use solar energy for farming.
“Any State that has built and relied on WINDMILLS and SOLAR for power are seeing RECORD BREAKING INCREASES IN ELECTRICITY AND ENERGY COSTS. THE SCAM OF THE CENTURY! We will not approve wind or farmer destroying Solar. The days of stupidity are over in the USA!!!” an X post written by Trump’s workforce reads.
Newsom is thinking about making the decision to run for president in 2028. Trump, who’s also thinking about running for president, isn’t a fan of a strong competitor like Newsom. However, Trump may not be able to run again because it would be considered running for a third term, which is illegal.
“In order to run for a third term, a candidate would need to modify the Constitution via repealing the 22nd amendment,” Government Teacher Rebecca Whitney said.
Newsom is holding a special election on Nov. 4 to let voters decide on the new voting line policies.
