This year, I had the privilege of going to a couple of the boys basketball Rec League games. Their name is the ‘D1 Rejects’ and they are heading into the championship game one.
“We came up with the name ‘D1 Rejects’ because we’re not on the school’s basketball team, but we still make it fun. The league is pretty big and we’ve done very well this season,” senior Connor Stephens said.
The team consists of seniors Jake Barnhart, Adam Yamasaki, Matthew English, Kayden Arsalane, Connor Stephens, Jack Funk, Landon King, Junior Maalaelu and Will Musgrove.
“We have all been playing on the same team since middle school and we really enjoy playing together and being able to play other teams. The games are competitive and a lot like a school game,” senior Jack Funk said.
They have done very well this season with Landon King being the head scorer and Matthew English trailing behind. They’ve played several teams from Orange but there are also teams from other Olentangy Schools and Westerville.
“I think we all like playing at the Westerville rec center. It’s super nice, has a good number of courts, and close enough to where we are not driving a ton to get to the games,” senior Kayden Arsalane said.
If they win this next game on Monday Mar. 10, they will receive an award and t-shirts. But most of all, they will be proud that they won and have progressed so much throughout their last year of playing together.
“I’m sad that this is our last year playing together because obviously we’re all splitting up to go to college, but I’m happy that we had this time to do this again,” Stephens said.
