It has been a tradition now at Olentangy Orange High School for students to dress up and enrich themselves in Hindu traditions during the time of Diwali. This year Diwali was on November 12th. This holiday is celebrated by Hindus all over the world. Let’s take a closer look at the students that participated in this event.
Juniors Salma Sajith and Holi Bommidi are 2 students who participated in the dress-up day and attended the celebrations after school in the commons with other students in different grade levels. They both have shed some light on their experience.
When asked about why they decided to participate in this dress up day at school, junior Salma Sajith told us “I wanted to embrace my inner indian and show off my other side,” Sajith said.
In preparation for Diwali both students get ready in their own ways. There is lots of decorating and rituals to do on this auspicious day.
“My family and I dress up and do puja. We prepare lots of food and invite people over,” Sajith said. Junior Holi Bommidi prepares differently, she told us “We decorate the whole house and get it ready to invite people over to come and watch fireworks,” Bommidi said.
Diwali is a time where so many people can come together and just celebrate and have fun. This is the reason so many people enjoy this festival so much.
“I would say making food with my mom and eating it is one of my most favorite things to do. I get to spend time with my family and I get to eat food that my mom doesn’t make on a normal basis,” Sajith said.
Diwali is a celebration that overall brings joy into the community. Dressing up at school is now starting to become a tradition here at orange. Doing events like these bring more unity to the students and brings everyone together.
