Temperatures are finally dropping as winter is approaching, yet boys are still throwing on a pair of shorts before heading off to school.
This odd fashion choice has led to lots of confusion from many girls who transition to long sleeves and pants in the winter.
“I understand it a little more if they’re just inside wearing shorts but aren’t guys cold outside?” junior Sydney Schwade said. “They shouldn’t be wearing shorts outside because they’ll be freezing, and they look confused on what season it is.”
To Schwade, wearing bare minimum clothing when it is not appropriate comes across as tacky.
“They look like they’re still in middle school trying to be cool and wearing shorts when it’s below freezing outside,” Schwade said.
She believes that the fashion statement developed from boys wanting to be viewed as “tough,” which then led to it being a habit.
“Those who continue to wear shorts have probably just developed a routine for wearing them at this point,” Schwade said.
Parental figures may need to step up and assist in deciding their child’s wardrobe for health concerns.
“If boys ever choose to complain about being sick or cold in the winter and they’re still wearing shorts outside, then parents should clue their kid in that it might be because they refuse to wear warm clothes,” Schwade said.
Schwade refuses to see the bright side of wearing shorts in the winter.
“Nothing gets benefitted from wearing shorts other than that you’re always ready to do a work out,” Schwade said.
On the other hand, some boys are completely satisfied with their choice of very little clothing.
“People who wear shorts simply like to do their own thing and just don’t like pants,” avid shorts wearer and sophomore Jake Girard said.
Girard feels that his clothing choices are rationalized because of self-perception and practicality purposes.
“I feel tough wearing shorts, but I also just get hot with a sweatshirt and sweatpants so shorts help,” Girard said.
He believes that there is not a problem with wearing shorts in the winter because there are no issues when inside.
“Being outside in the cold for a long time is not ideal but once I get indoors everything is OK again,” Girard said.
His mom is unfazed by the shorts controversy and allows him to have freedom in what he wears.
“My mom doesn’t care that I wear shorts because she lets me dress however I want to,” Girard said.
Girard recognizes that shorts are not the most practical for the winter, yet refuses to stop wearing them.
“Getting cold is obviously a downside of wearing shorts, however going inside helps so I will still wear shorts,” Girard said.
