pumpkins and scary movies are back. October is the best time to watch horror movies, whether it be a classic or one of the many new releases that came this month.
“Smile” , released Sept. 30, is a psychological horror movie about a woman named Rose Cotter, played by Sosie Bacon. She is a psychologist and witnesses a horrifying death when meeting with a patient.
After that she starts experiencing the same visions that her patient had, and she would see random people or someone she knew smiling at her that no one else could see. The movie follows her trying to get rid of it and learning more about it.
This movie is definitely for those who love horror. It’s filled with lots of jump scares and suspenseful scenes leaving the audience on the edge of their seat from start to finish, although a lot of the jump scares are pretty predictable which takes away some of the scariness of the movie.
There are some really great special effects at the end which definitely makes the movie worth watching. Sosie Bacon’s acting makes this movie even more believable that this could really happen, this movie deserves five out of five stars.
Another popular horror movie from this year is The Black Phone. This movie stars Mason Thames who plays a young boy named Finney Shaw and Ethan Hawke who plays the Grabber.
“The Black Phone” is about Finney Shaw getting kidnapped by the Grabber, the same unknown man who kidnapped many other boys in the area. Most of the movie follows Finney as he desperately tries to find a way out of the Grabber’s basement before it’s too late.
Overall, this was a really great movie that can be enjoyed by anyone, even those who don’t like horror. There was a lot of suspense throughout the film and a great twist at the end. The only thing that would make this movie better is giving more background information to the characters, especially the Grabber.
This movie had really a creepy vibe to it from the beginning and had great acting. However, they didn’t do a great job developing the Grabber’s background and what made him who he was or how the other boys are able to talk to Finney through the phone, because of that the movie gets four out of five stars.
“Hereditary” is a supernatural horror film, released Jan. 2018, starring Toni Collette and Alex Wolff. This movie follows the Graham family after the death of Ellen, the grandmother and how even the most horrifying and unusual things can be inherited.
Annie, the mom, becomes more on edge as the movie progresses and as she uncovers more about her secretive mother’s life. The supernatural aspect builds up more and more until the end when it’s revealed what had been happening.
This movie is filled with suspense and gore and is a slow burn, this is the type of movie for people who really love to be scared. This movie stands out from the rest as it doesn’t use many jump scares and will scare viewers when they least expect it.
This movie was really well made and thought out and leaves the audience thinking about it even long after watching it. This movie deserves five out of five stars.
“Terrifier 2” released Oct. 6 follows Art the killer clown as he returns to Miles County, one year after the massacre, and torments Sienna Shaw and her younger brother Johnathan on Halloween. This movie is filled with blood and gore and is not for the faint of heart.
Even though this movie was pretty bloody it was still able to be comedic at times due to Art’s gestures or just how ridiculous some of this movie is. It had great symbolism and it really kept viewers on the edge of their seats at the end.
However, some of the acting was a little cringy and unrealistic. The movie also has a two and a half hour run time, which makes the movie feel boring and like it’s just dragging on. This movie gets a well-deserved two out of five stars.
