Starbucks has recently created and acted on a new policy where employees write on the drink cups that are given to customers. This policy has brought in a lot of new consumers to Starbucks, due to the extreme marketing they’ve also promoted with the idea.
Many different things are being written on these drink cups, from song lyrics to intricate drawings. Normally, the names of customers are printed on a sticker on the drink, and they still are doing that. However, now someone might see an “Enjoy!” next to their name. People started noticing this policy on Feb 6.
“Yes, we are required to write on the cups,” Westerville Starbucks worker Angelina Tiberi said. She explains that this is an indispensable part of the job because they are supposed to help make customers feel like they are having a more personalized and special experience.
Though Tiberi explains that this is required, multiple people all over the internet have spoken out about not getting a message on their cup, including frequent Starbucks customer Lila Robinson.
“It’s very unfair because it feels like they are picking and choosing who to give the messages to. I just want a message on my cup” Robinson said. “I feel left out that no one has written on any of my cups because I want to experience what everyone else is by getting a funny message.”
Many also share mixed feelings about the messages on cups-some saying that they are too long or too short.
“In my personal experience, no one has said anything about writing on the cups let alone anything negative, but I’ve heard from other stories that people are saying it’s ruining the aesthetic and have asked for their cups to not have anything written on them,” Tiberi said.
According to today.com, baristas are also complaining about the newest policy, many saying that they don’t have time to write a message on every single cup especially during rush hour. Others explain that they’re running out of notes to write and panic when the time comes to write them.
“Other people are getting pretty much all of the above for their notes. I’ve seen drawings of Ash Trevino all the way to people writing every lyric of the song Ivy by Frank Ocean,” Robinson said. Videos all over the social media platform Tiktok have been trending of baristas writing famous movie lines or song lyrics that mostly take up the whole cup. The comments differ from “I would tip 20$ if I got this OMG” to “The pretty pinkness of the drink is covered by this” with a not so happy emoji… Nevertheless, many people are posting their messages on social media and bringing more attention to Starbucks, which is the overall goal.
