Having one’s entire relationship in the spotlight, such as sharing every aspect of the relationship on social media, is harmful for couples. Having relationships in the public eye can cause many couples to call it quits.
A relationship is a commitment between two people and when one invites opinions into that union pressures are put on it. People can already feel pressured by friends or family during a relationship– adding thousands of opinions does not help. Fans begin to make accusations based on another’s false opinions or incomplete information, according to indiatimes.com.
Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez officially broke up in 2018. Fans clung to rumors that they were on and off for a while, but later that year Bieber surprised the world by marrying Hailey Baldwin now Hailey Bieber. This created speculations and a rivalry between fans as some supported Gomez and others supported Baldwin. This rivalry continues even after Gomez told her fans to show kindness multiple times, according to Vogue.
During Bieber and Gomez’s relationship, there was a huge social media presence that placed a lot of pressure on them both. During one of their break ups, Gomez posted that she thinks relationships should be kept off the internet, according to Vogue.
The press and fans being so involved in these two celebrities’ love lives created a distance between them. It caused multiple break-ups and make-ups. Bieber and Gomez’s relationship was so filled with judgement and speculation they eventually ended things for good.
Many fans were also comparing Baldwin to Gomez and taking Gomez’s side, posting that she and Bieber were a better couple. It’s not the fans’ decision on who should be with whom, but everyone has their own opinion.
This gossip has led Baldwin to have mental health issues that stem from being compared to others on social media and the opinions of multiple people that she doesn’t even know, according to Vogue.
While Gomez, Bieber and Baldwin’s relationships were very public, Tom Holland and Zendaya have kept their relationship from the internet. However, they did share their engagement with the world at the Golden Globes in the beginning of 2025, according to Who.
Holland and Zendaya’s relationship staying private created a space where they could enjoy the special moments together without the looming thoughts of other people’s opinions.
They kept their relationship personal only sharing the highlights with social media and their support for each other. By not sharing every fight they had they prevented certain opinions from arising about their status and avoided some judgement. They’re now happily engaged.
Social media should be a place where people can be real with each other but also a place where special life moments can be shared. It should be used to keep in touch with people who one cares about.
Every little detail about celebrities’ relationships should not be shared on social media. That can lead to people being hurt and long-term mental health issues later in life. Keeping the details off social media creates a place where two people can explore an honest and meaningful connection without having to worry about thousands of people’s opinions and pressures.
