With all the changes in everything from fashion to social media, it’s hard to believe that 2014 was only 10 years ago. But also, some things that are the same can make it seem like no time has passed at all.
One obvious difference between 2024 and 2014 is social media. Social media is very important in 2024 culture as a way to stay in contact with friends and keep yourself entertained, with TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat being the most popular apps.
“Social media is important to keep in touch with friends and share fun pictures and videos with others. Sometimes you can even learn new things on social media platforms,” sophomore Claire Ditty said.
In 2014, social media was a thing, but it was more about having fun and way less serious than it is now. Additionally, Instagram was pretty new, and TikTok or Musically were not made yet, Twitter was the main social media app that people used, according to Pew Research Center, 37 percent of adults 18-29 used twitter.
“Twitter was like an app, Instagram didn’t come around until I think I was like a freshman or a sophomore in high school, and TikTok or Musically, that wasn’t a thing yet, Snapchat had just come out like Instagram. This was more when you posted for fun, not for views or likes or anything,” English Teacher, and junior in highschool in 2014 Alessandra England Valz said ¨Social media wasnt as serious, you didn’t know about your digital footprint because it was so new people didn’t realize the gravity of if you post something it’s there forever.¨
A fashion item that was very popular in 2024 was Uggs. There are many different styles of Uggs, slippers, or boots. According to Vogue, items such as corduroy pants, collarless blazers, and trench coats were popular in 2024.
“I’ve seen a lot of people wearing Uggs and I really like mine¨ Ditty said
2014 style had some different looks. Statement pieces were big, like a necklace or a pair of combat boots. According to Vogue, other items that were popular include frayed denim, faux fur and miniskirts.
¨Infinity scarves, cheetah print before it came back in now, combat boots were big, ballet flats, big statement pieces like necklaces,¨ England Valz said.
In 2024 Twisters was a very popular movie, according to The Hollywood Report, Twisters had a domestic opening of $80.5 million. Another movie that was very hyped up was Wicked, which according to ScreenRant, grossed $114 million on its opening weekend.
“Twisters was popular in the summer but I also think Wicked has become very popular too. Even though it just came out it seems to be a big hit.”
2014 TV was not very different from today, many popular shows then are still popular now. Also, lots of shows that were produced in 2014 are still very popular.
¨Vampire Diaries, One Tree Hill was big, Gilmore Girls, all of these that you guys like binge now I was like there for the release,¨ England Valz said
One thing that has not changed since 2014 is the popularity of Taylor Swift. According to Billboard, after the release of Swift’s 5th album 1989, it sold over a million copies in its debut week in the US, having the most albums sold in one week in more than a decade. Swift’s success has not died down since then, according to Forbes, Swift’s latest album ¨The Tortured Poets Department¨ sold 2.6 million copies on its first day, and the album broke several Billboard records.
¨Taylor Swift 1989 came out in the fall of 2014, in my senior year, and I remember that, so that was big, so she was still big¨ England Valz said.
