On Monday, May 5, the Met Gala took place in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The evening was a testament to how fashion serves as a powerful medium for storytelling, identity, and resistance.
The theme this year was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” inspired by Monica L. Miller’s work as a writer and honoring black dandyism and the museum’s new exhibit opening on May 10. The dress code for this prestigious event was “Tailored For You,” encouraging attendees to draw their inspiration for their outfits from heritage, cultural figures, and personal narratives. From embroidered suits reminiscent of the jazz era to contemporary interpretations of classic tailoring, the red carpet became a canvas of diverse and meaningful fashion statements.
The newly opening exhibit will cast a spotlight on African American designers whose designs often contrast with societal norms. Designers such as Virgil Abloh, Grace Wales Bonner, and Dapper Dan will be recognized for their work surrounding identity and self-expression.
This year’s co-chairs for the Met Gala include music producer Pharrell Williams, musician A$AP Rocky, actor Colman Domingo, F1 Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton, and the Vogue Editor in Chief, Anna Wintour. Basketball star Lebron James was supposed to make his debut on the carpet as honorary chair, however, due to a knee injury, James had to back out of the gala.
The 2025 Met Gala surpassed its status as just a fashion gathering, transforming into a meaningful tribute to Black cultural heritage. Through the lens of this year’s theme, the event highlighted the significant influence of black dandyism on both fashion and society as a whole.
