Moana is back for another movie with a new addition to the family: a little sister. In this new movie, Moana has to juggle being a good older sister along with being a Way finder for her village.
In the previous movie, Moana was trying to understand what her purpose was, as her parents wanted her to lead her people and become a Chief. In this movie, Moana is tasked with trying to find other people of the sea as a Way finder.
Moana is struck by lightning and is sent a vision by her elders and ancestors about an ancient curse from an evil storm god named Nalo. Nalo sunk an island called Motufetu, that used to unite all the people of the sea to the bottom of the ocean, then goes on to tell her that her island will become deserted if she doesn’t find a way to raise the island.
Moana sets up a Wayfinding crew with particularly skilled villagers named Kele, a farmer; Loto, a craftswoman; and Moni, a very strong storyteller. Together, they set off to find Motufetu and follow the star that was in Moana’s vision, leaving behind her sad sister.
Meanwhile, Maui, the demigod, is also in search of Motufetu but got into a disagreement with Nalo and was captured by Nalo’s taskmaster, Matangi.
During this scene, the audience was on the edge of its seats because everyone thought this new villain was dangerous, especially because her voice was very deep and the lighting was extremely dark. Little did the audience know that later on she was going to help Moana and Maui on their journey.
Moana and her crew have an encounter with the Kakamora coconut pirates, who were in the last movie, and the pirates explain that when Nalo sunk Motufetu, they lost their home. They all run into an obstacle and find themselves in Matangi’s lair where she reveals that Nalo banished her and traps her there.
They find Maui there and Matangi helps them go meet Nalo but get ambushed and sent to a deserted island.
The music during this scene was so creative and was reminiscent of the first movie because the special effects that played during it looked just like the ones in the old movie.
Maui urges Moana not to give up and together they fix their broken boat and all head to meet Nalo. The directors made very cool special effects like the multiple tornados and snakes Nalo sent their way that looked so lifelike.
Nalo takes away Maui’s powers after he raises the island, which causes Moana to take a stand and touch it. This causes Nalo to kill her from all the power.
The audience was extremely scared because everyone thought Moana died but just when all hope was lost, Maui revived her with the help of her ancestors.
Moana gains a way finders tattoo and Maui becomes a god once again. Maui proceeds to use his regained powers to raise Motufetu out of the water, reconnecting the people of the ocean. Moana returns home with different tribes and people of the sea and is celebrated. This movie was a 5/5 rating because the voiceover for all the animated characters fit very well, and the plot was so unpredictable. It was convincing that when Moana died, she would have stayed dead because they waited at least five minutes to revive her.
