As Thanksgiving is approaching, the importance of recognizing what someone’s grateful for is the key part to this holiday. One big thing to be thankful for is friends which was why Friendsgiving was adopted. The purpose of Friendsgiving is to appreciate friends and share why they are grateful for them.
Friendsgiving has become popular to do within the last few years. Typically, it is celebrated a week before Thanksgiving and can be celebrated in many different ways.
“I’m celebrating Friendsgiving this year by having everyone over at my house where we will all bring food and desserts. We usually play games, eat food and watch movies together but the most important part is spending time together,” senior Hailey Zinn said.
The beauty of this tradition is that it can range from being very casual to making it an elegant meal. Whether it’s ordering in a pizza or having a full course meal, Friendsgiving isn’t about the food, it’s about the quality time together.
Although it is unclear where exactly Friendsgiving originated from, it became more popular in the late 2000s and became popular when young adults who were unable to travel home, spent their Thanksgiving with friends, according to growwithlome.com.
This is a great opportunity for college students coming home who don’t get to see their friends that often or high school students celebrating their Thanksgiving break with friends.
“I love being able to get with my friends, eat food and have a good time. I would recommend doing some group activities to make the day more fun,” senior Allison Estes said.
Since the temperature is dropping in the month of November, some good and warm ideas in addition to food are watching a movie, baking cookies or some sort of craft. Another idea is to go around and tell each other what they’re grateful for about one another to embrace the purpose of this holiday. “Friends are one of the most important aspects in my life so, embracing that and making that known to them is necessary to me. Having them over, telling them how much I care for them and spending quality time with them is one of my favorite times of the year,” Zinn said.
