New Show Comes to Netflix: Wednesday show review

Netflix’s recent spinoff series, “Wednesday” took the internet by storm back in November 2022. The show became so popular that it had officially broken the record for most streamed Netflix show within weeks of its release, overtaking “Stranger Things” in the process. Its immediate success had even earned Jenna Ortega, the actress who plays Wednesday Addams, a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal the following year.

Directed by legendary film director, Tim Burton, the supernatural dark comedy series, “Wednesday” stars Ortega as the title character, Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair, and Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay. The show is rated TV-14 for it contains fear, language, and violence.

The show follows teenage Wednesday Addams and her journey at Nevermore Academy: a special school for outcasts, freaks, and monsters; located just outside of a small town in Jericho, Vermont.

When it is rumored that a potential murderer is lurking around in the shadows putting multiple students’ lives at state, Wednesday with the help of her handy sidekick Thing, decides to take matters into her own hands in order to solve the case.

Having seen the show more than once, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the characters, the costumes, and set design. I have multiple favorite characters, but my top three favorites include Thing,  Wednesday’s roommate Enid Sinclair, and of course Wednesday herself.

Thing remained one of my favorite characters throughout the series because I loved how he was able to fluently communicate with those around him utilizing various gestures and movements. Although he is not one to speak, he is the perfect sidekick to accompany our gothic protagonist on her mission.

Throughout the series, viewers often see him serving as her loyal helping hand, always being there for Wednesday when she needed it; whether it came in the form of filing in on her novel when she was busy or finding his way into the clothing boutique to find her the perfect dress for the Rave’N.

Another thing I loved about the show were the costumes because I believe that wardrobe plays an important role in symbolizing each character’s distinctive personalities. A great example of that would be the outfits in which the main characters wore to the Rave’N.

Bianca Barclay’s beautiful all sequined dress paired with matching turquoise eye shadow was absolutely beautiful. Not only did the color look amazing with the actress’s skin tone, but it also helped to represent who her character was. Because Bianca is revealed to be a siren, the color of her dress made perfect sense as it was similar to that of the sea.

Because I really enjoyed this show, I would give it a 5 star rating and definitely recommend it to those who are die-hard fans of “The Addams Family ” movies, original tv show, or simply just enjoy watching dark fantasy comedy series. Viewers won’t be disappointed once they check it out!
