This year’s Grammys has sparked a lot of controversies. People were left upset by the end of the Grammys, with who won being just one of the many reasons. However, on a positive note, a lot of artists have also made history this year.
Album of the year was given to Harry Styles for his album “Harry’s House”. Viewers were outraged, not entirely because of the win but because of his acceptance speech. According to nbcnews.com in the last line of his speech Styles said “This doesn’t happen to people like me very often and this is so, so nice. Thank you very much,”.
This line upset many fans who took the line “people like me” as being white men who historically have been the most likely to win. Many fans took to social media to express their disapproval.
“Harry Styles definitely deserved to win album of the year. With various concerts all over the world and so many records broken, it was well earned. His speech had great intention and meaning behind it, but, I feel like it definitely could’ve been worded better. Regardless of the way his speech came off, he definitely did not mean for his speech to come off the way it did,” sophomore Hannah Peterson said.
Song of the year was given to Bonnie Raitt for her song “Just Like That”. For many this was an unexpected win. Younger viewers didn’t know who she was which caused a lot of outrage on social media as other nominees were all very well-known musicians.
“Personally, I have never heard the song that won song of the year. However, considering so many people were confused shows that it shouldn’t have won. The song of the year needs to be something that reflects the year and when you hear it in the future can look back. ‘Just Like That’, no matter how much people like it, it wasn’t the song of the year. I think it was ‘As It Was’, ‘Easy On Me’, or ‘About Damn Time’,” said Peterson
Sam Smith and Kim Petras won best pop duo for their song “Unholy” which has gotten both positive and negative reactions from listeners. The song was released in September 2022, and quickly went viral on Tiktok.
Kim Petras made an emotional speech talking about how she is the first transgender woman to win this award. Sam Smith also made history as the first non-binary person to win this award.
“I don’t love the song ‘Unholy’. Yet, out of the nominations, I do think they should’ve won. The song came out and immediately became popular and can be heard everywhere. Personally, I’m not a fan but the song is catchy and I do think it’s a very well made song,” Peterson said
Beyonce made history at this year’s Grammys with the most wins ever. This year she took home; dance/electronic recording for her song “Break My Soul”, dance/electronic album for “Renaissance”, R&B performance for “Plastic Off The Sofa”, and R&B song for “Cuff It”. In total, she has 32 Grammys and 88 nominations.
“I think Beyoncé has made one of the biggest impressions on all media and generations. If you asked someone who Beyoncé is, most of them would recognize the name. Therefore, I definitely think she deserves the awards she has received,” junior Katy Martin said.
Taylor Swift won Best Music Video for “All Too Well: The Short Film”. Swift has made history with this win as she is the first artist with a sole directing credit. Alongside her win for Best Music Video, Swift was also nominated for Song of the Year, Best Country Song, and Best Song Written for Visual Media.
“I think all too well was a very cinematic music video because it told a story and it definitely deserved awards for the unique creativity but I don’t agree with it winning the best music video of the year. Other artists had more artistic approaches in their videos, and music goes better with art than cinematography. I’m not personally a major Taylor Swift fan but I do think she deserved the awards she got and her music does deserve recognition,” Martin said.
