If teenage girls love one thing, it is keeping up with trends, especially for fashion. As soon as a new clothing item or accessory fad spreads around social media, everyone races to purchase it. But what the majority of buyers don’t remember is that these trends have most likely been popular before.
According to InStyle, fashion constantly repeats itself in cycles. The youngest generation has been drawing ideas from past trends and making a few edits to modernize designs leading them to be popular again.
What are commonly known as flare pants with the original name of “bell-bottoms” due to their shape was trending in the 1970s according to Groovy History. Both women and men wore these pants, and they were typically made out of denim.
Recently, athletic brands such as Aerie and Lululemon have vamped up this design by transforming the pants from jeans to leggings. Flare leggings are extremely comfortable to wear since they are more flowy than the typical legging and they are a very easy way to amp up any outfit.
I am not the biggest fan of bell-bottom style jeans because of how the denim has very little movement. However, I would like to see flared trousers as an alternative to become trendy again.
Claw clips also have been all the rave lately. They were a typical hair accessory throughout the 90s but have fallen out of popularity over the years until now, according to The New York Times.
Back in the 90s, Americans would see claw clips on celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston in “Friends” and Julia Stiles in “10 Things I Hate About You”. Although, now more current celebrities such as Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber are wearing them.
Claw clips most certainly were a great accessory to bring back. They are convenient if someone is looking to throw their hair up quickly, but also a way to elevate one’s hairstyle with a cute design or colored clip.
I do think the newer designs of these clips, such as the flower shape, are more inconvenient. I own one, and it does not hold my hair the same way an original shape does. Therefore, sticking to the traditional is the way to go.
Chunky sneakers, specifically platforms, are becoming a more common shoe for the younger generation. In the 90s, the Spice Girls started the wave of platform sneakers by wearing them in music video shoots and at concerts according to Insider.
Now platform Converse shoes have been extremely popular with the teenage community, as well as classic white platform sneakers from brands such as Nike, Adidas and Reebok, and even Ugg has created platform boots.
I own both platform sneakers and platform sandals that I love to wear with a casual outfit, or even a dress or with jeans. Wearing any form of platform shoe will give an outfit a lot more dimension; whereas very flat shoes would make an outfit a little more dull.
Platform sneakers most definitely have had a great comeback, and they should be trending. Platform heels would also be a great addition to come back into style because they make any plain look more edgy.
Overall, bringing back fashion trends from previous generations has been very successful in the fashion industry. I am looking forward to seeing what other styles will be coming back this year.
